Speakeasy is two rooms on one block: the Kitchen, a cookbook, and the Bar, a slot machine for cocktails. Both are run by Happy Jewel LLC (“we”) at speakeasy.cooking. This page says what we keep about you, why, how long we keep it, who else sees it, and how to take it with you or have it removed.
The two rooms share one account: sign in to either and you are the same reader in both. What this page says about your account goes for both rooms. The parts that belong to one room only are marked with its name.
Visiting
While Speakeasy is in early access, a visitor who isn’t signed in sees the landing page and the front of each room, and nothing more. You don’t need an account for that, and we keep nothing about you on our server beyond the request log below.
Like any website, the server writes a short log line for each request: your connection’s address, what was asked for, when, and whether it worked. We use these logs to keep the service running and to stop abuse. They are kept for 14 days, then deleted.
We count visits with Cloudflare Web Analytics. It counts visits, page views, the pages that sent you here and how fast the pages load. It sets no cookies, doesn’t identify you and doesn’t follow you to other sites.
The waitlist
If you ask for a seat, we keep the email address you give us, which door you asked at (the landing page, a room’s front, or the page a refused sign-in lands on) and when. We use it only to write to you about access. Joining the waitlist makes no account, and the address isn’t linked to a Google account or to anything else we keep.
We keep your place on the list until you ask us to remove it or we open sign-up to everyone. To leave it, write to [email protected].
Invitations
Signing in is by invitation for now. We keep a list of the addresses we have invited: the address, who invited it, and when. We use it only to let invited people in. If you sign in with a Google account that isn’t on the list, no account is made.
Signing in
You sign in with Google, and Google tells us your Google account’s ID, your email address and your name. We keep those, a handle, and the date your account was made.
While you are signed in, the server keeps a session: a scrambled copy of your session key and when it was last used. It does not record your address or your device. A session ends after 7 days without use, after 30 days at most, or when you sign out.
What your account keeps
Your books, your notes, ratings and marks, and your settings, including whether you agreed to talk to the barkeep and the cooks. All of it stays until you remove it or delete your account.
The Kitchen
Recipes, pages and photos
- Your recipes and your pages, with the photos you add to them, and your cooked log.
- Photos are stripped of their location and camera details before they are stored. You can delete a photo at any time, and its files go at once.
- When you ask the Kitchen to read a recipe page or a photo of a recipe for you, the page’s text or the picture is sent to Anthropic to be read. The picture itself is not kept.
- A book you share carries its photos only if you tick Include photos.
Talking to the barkeep and the cooks
The barkeep and the cooks are fictional, and their answers are written by an AI model, run by Anthropic. We keep each conversation on your account: what you said, what was said back, the model used and the cost. The words are cleared after 90 days, and you can clear a conversation sooner. The counts and the cost stay, without the words.
Sharing a book
When you share one of your books, we print a fixed copy of it behind a link, and anyone with the link can read it. Only the book travels: its title, its sections and its recipes or drinks. Your notes, ratings, marks, cooked log, tape and shelf stay with you, and your name goes on it only if you add the bookplate. You can take a link down at any time.
Anyone reading a shared book can report it to us. A report keeps the reason, an optional note, the time, and a scrambled form of the reporter’s address, which is cleared when the report is closed. Closed reports are deleted after 90 days.
Cookies and browser storage
Speakeasy sets one cookie: your session, while you are signed in. A second, short-lived one carries you through Google’s sign-in and back. There are no advertising or tracking cookies. Each room keeps a few preferences and conveniences in your browser’s own storage, and they don’t leave your device unless you ask.
Where it’s kept, and who else sees it
- Our API server and its database are hosted by a cloud provider in Germany.
- Cloudflare serves the site and carries every request to our server. The house art, the photos you add and the backups are stored with Cloudflare too (R2, in Western Europe).
- Google, when you sign in.
- Anthropic, when you talk to the barkeep or a cook, or ask the Kitchen to read a recipe for you.
We don’t sell your data, and we don’t show advertising.
Backups
Every night the database is backed up. Each backup is kept off-site, with Cloudflare, for 30 days, and never longer than 35; the last few days’ copies are also kept on the server. So something you delete, your whole account included, can survive in a backup for up to 30 days, and no longer than 35.
How long things are kept
- Your account and what it keeps
- Until you delete them, or the account.
- A session
- 7 days without use, 30 days at most, or until you sign out.
- Conversations
- The words for 90 days, or until you clear them.
- Reports on shared books
- Until closed, then 90 days.
- The waitlist
- Until you ask to leave it, or sign-up opens to everyone.
- Server logs
- 14 days.
- Backups
- 30 days off-site, 35 at the very most.
Taking it with you, or having it removed
Export downloads everything your account keeps, from both rooms, as one file. Delete my account removes the account and everything it keeps from the server, in the Kitchen and the Bar alike.
- In the Kitchen, sign in and open your account from the round button at the top of the shelf: Export my account, Download my photos (your photos in one archive) and Delete my account are there.
- In the Bar, sign in, open Settings and find Account → Your data: Export my bar and Delete my account.
If you can’t sign in, or would rather we did it, write to us at [email protected].
Questions
Questions about your data go to [email protected]; anything else to [email protected]. If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. The rules of the house are on the terms page.
